Required by a general insurance company and will be based in Nairobi.

Primary Responsibility

The Underwriting Manager, reporting to the Operations Manager, is responsible for the daily management of underwriting and reinsurance processes. This individual provides leadership to the organization’s underwriting and reinsurance functions and contributes to the development and implementation of organizational strategies, policies, and standard operating procedures. The Operations Manager may also assign other duties to the incumbent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and supervision for the underwriting and reinsurance functions on a day-to-day basis.
  • Ensure timely monitoring and accurate posting of underwriting transactions within the system.
  • Guarantee consistent and timely issuance of policy documents to insured parties.
  • Coordinate with underwriters and the Registry to ensure the proper creation and dispatch of underwriting files.
  • Monitor production to ensure business acceptance, debiting, and authorization within agreed turnaround times (TAT).
  • Ensure business is accepted at the correct price and with appropriate terms and conditions to achieve profitability.
  • Supervise the renewal process to maximize the retention of profitable business.
  • Conduct training for staff and intermediaries on products and new process procedures.
  • Participate in business development activities as required.
  • Ensure quotations are prepared in accordance with reinsurance and company guidelines.
  • Provide continuous coaching to the team to enhance performance.
  • Oversee the Reinsurance function to efficiently and effectively manage all reinsurance aspects of the GB Business, including Healthcare, ensuring satisfactory underwriting standards are achieved according to best reinsurance practices.
  • Ensure reinsurance treaties are filed before the deadline and secure approved terms from the IRA.
  • Identify areas for improvement and streamline business process procedures to adapt to the evolving business environment.
  • Circulate the new rates for all risks underwritten by the company for the subsequent year by December 15th to all marketers, underwriters, and intermediaries.
  • Participate in the recruitment process by conducting interviews.
  • Conduct orientation and training for new staff members.
  • Collaborate with underwriters to establish KPIs, review their performance, and recommend necessary actions to improve performance.
  • Participate in the formulation and implementation of company strategy.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports as required.

Requirements

(i).         Experience and Knowledge

  • Comprehensive knowledge of non-motor and motor underwriting processes.
  • Proven expertise in negotiating reinsurance treaties and placing risks.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong written and oral communication abilities.
  • Effective negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated commercial acumen and a thorough understanding of business requirements.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).

(ii).         Academic and Professional Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management or a related field. Master’s Degree in Business Administration is an added advantage.
  • ACII Diploma or Diploma in Insurance.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant working experience as an Underwriting Manager within the insurance industry in Kenya.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.
